ADD/ADHD and Neurofeedback
According to a study conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 6.1 million children in the United States have been diagnosed with ADHD/ADD. In fact, the percentage of children diagnosed with this disorder increased 42% between the years 2003 to 2012
What is ADHD/ADD
ADHD stands for attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, a chronic condition including attention difficulty, hyperactivity and impulsiveness. It is common for ADHD/ADD to begin in childhood and can persist into adulthood.
How Neurofeedback Can Help ADHD Symptoms
Studies have shown that 85%-90% of people with ADHD produce a greater ratio of theta waves compared to beta waves. Neurofeedback is a useful intervention for ADHD which can helps train the brainto reduce theta wave activity while increasing beta waves that can reduce ADHD symptoms by improving focus, impulse control and executive function.
In a typical training session, a practitioner monitors a client’s brain waves using sensors. The sensors have the ability to measure the brain’s activity and relay it to the practitioner through a computer interface that allows them to see when the brain reaches optimal levels. Through repetition of training exercises for the brain, the brain can achieve a more ideal state of functioning that becomes second nature.
Benefits of Neurofeedback as an Alternative Treatment for ADHD
There are numerous treatment options for those diagnosed with ADHD. What works best might depend on the individual, child, and family. Medications can have negative side effects for children such as:
- Sleep problems
- Decreased appetite
- Weight loss
- Increased blood pressure
- Dizziness
- Headaches and stomachaches
- Rebound (irritability when the medication wears off)
- Moodiness and irritability
- Nervousness
- Tics (sudden, repetitive movements or sounds)
- Personality changes, like appearing way too serious and not being as enthusiastic as usual
Neurofeedback for ADHD has little to no side effects and may even lead to the reduction or complete elimination of stimulant medication.
Testimonial:
“My son was part of your neurofeedback program over a year ago. There are not enough words to thank you and your team for all the help you provided him. He was diagnosed with ADD last year and the only treatment that his pediatrician offered was ADD medicine. We contacted you in hope to find another alternative.
He received over 20 Neurofeedback sessions and those were the life-changing moment for him and for our family. His change was really amazing. He is now able to focus at school. He is more productive than ever, being able to complete more complex projects. His teacher was surprised with the huge progress he had last academic year. I am a strong supporter of Neurofeedback now.
Thanks so much for providing such wonderful service to our community.
